How Alike We Are

Are we so different when it comes to what we want for our families?  Do those who lack financial resources care less for their children than others who have resources?  Do children who attend under-performing schools have fewer aspirations than children who attend affluent schools? Do individuals who have executive positions care more for their children than others who have minimum wage jobs? The answer is emphatically no!

I believe the vast majority of people want what is “good for the children.” One would have to be heartless and cruel to not want the best for all children regardless of their race, ethnicity, religious beliefs or socio economic background.

Every child deserves a healthy start—from conception. Pregnant moms and supportive dads play an important part in shaping the life of their child. They need knowledge to ensure that their child receives the best chance for a healthy life and resources to meet their needs. We take a look at possible birth defects and what parents can do.

Also in this issue top rated shoes for people who work on their feet, the status of tuberculosis in Kansas City, why meat protein is important in one’s diet and what parents can do to overcome risky behaviors in teens.

With this issue Our Health Matters meets a five-year milestone. Today, more than ever there is the need to meet the challenge to take control of your health, and stand in support of issues that make our community a healthier place.
