Life Brings Changes
Life is altered when a family member is no longer able to care for themselves due to physical or mental disabilities. An aging parent may be suffering from dementia or a child may receive an injury or become chronically ill. Most families are unprepared for the major adjustments that transform their lives.
Most people want to stay in familiar and comfortable surroundings: home, either theirs or a relative’s. When remaining at home is not an option, families often scramble to make the best choice for care based on available resources.
It is no secret that family caregivers give more than compassion. They place their lives on hold to devise a plan that ensures the comfort and care of their loved one.
Homes are remodeled; work schedules are altered; family activities are curtailed; social lives are limited. Often isolated from their own support system, caregivers display mixed emotions — love, pride, duty, exhaustion, guilt, remorse — about the responsibility for their relative and the thought of passing that responsibility to non-family members.
Today there are numerous options to help those caring for others: in-home services, equipment and assisted living centers to help patients maintain best possible health and to assist caregivers balance their lives.
In this issue we share some of the challenges faced by caregivers and highlight a variety of resources available. Whether you chose to care for a loved one at home or seek out the services of others, we commend you for stepping up.
