Looking Forward to 2020

Since 1979, Healthy People has set national, 10-year goals to help improve the health and care of Americans. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is beginning to establish its goals for the next ten years.

The purpose, goals, organization and action plans of Healthy People 2020 will be based on public participation. HHS will hold six regional public meetings to gather ideas, comments and concerns from communities and individuals during the spring of 2008.

Based on the information gathered from those meetings and other communications, HHS will publish the Healthy People 2020 mission, focus areas and criteria for selecting prioritizing the objectives in late 2008 or early 2009.

The official launch of Health People 2020 will be in January 2010, with the release of the goals, objectives and actions plans for the next 10-year targets.
